wSo here we are. My 1972 Bus has covered a total of 105,820 miles since new. I purchased the bus in Leyton, London in 1993. It was oxide red then. ChangeswOver the years the van has gone through a number of changes. The first significant change was the lowering by 4 inches. This picture was taken a Vanfest 2000
wIn 94 a reconditioned engine went in, this I bought from Volkspares in Leytonstone, London. A 1600 AD block with twin Kadron carbs. The twin Kadron carbs really drank the gas like it was going out of style. wThen came the 1st spray job. This I completed myself in my mother-in-law's back garden, and what a treat it came out. The colours are Ford ivory white on the top and Toyota blue underneath. I used the bus as a daily driver until 96. Then can 2 kids and 4 years at university, enough to slow anyone down. The bus went into the garage and sat there till July Y2K. In July 00 I decided to give it a complete overhaul and try to get it ready for Vanfest 2000. It was a bit of a mess, the overhaul included respray, engine pull, underseal and rust removal. I managed it, we got there and had a great time. Here are the pictures.
wThe van originally came with just a rock and roll bed. I made use of this for the first 3 years until 1996. Then I went all out and purchased a Danbury conversion. There is a nice pull out cooker, plenty of storage and it can now sleep 2 adults and to kids. Here is my wife sorting the breakfast!!!
wIn August Y2K I pulled the engine again, cleaned it all up. It was a real mess, mainly because it had not been cleaned since 94. I also had a really bad smell of petrol coming from the right hand side, near the filler cap. Further investigation found a rotten breather pipe on top of the fuel tank. The engine received a complete respray the colour is now grey, clean and glossy.
wOn the 10th Sept 00 I refitted the engine with my pal Bob who has a really nice 1979 type 2, that's me on the right, the final tinkering. See the carburetor is now back to a single 34PIC. 28 to the gallon now!!!
It is on it's second engine. The 1st was replaced by myself 1993. |
